Now Spleene has launched the first pictures for the 2013 SPX-2 kite, a brand new version of the successful SPX. They did not launch any new kites during 2012, so this release feels great!

Note to self – Palms near the beach are often closer than they seems to be
Have you ever flown your kite into a palm? I have. Today at Bulabog beach in Boracay I realized that the trees are quite close to the shore on high tide. Luckily I was not the only one…

Boracay Funboard cup (Kitesurfing and Windsurfing)
Everything is great here in Boracay. Tomorrow the Boracay Funboard Cup starts, with competitions in both kitesurfing and windsurfing. I am not going to participate, but I might write a report from it, it is one of Asias most known wind- and kitesurfing events, and a whole bunch of pro’s are going to compete.

Gin kites ending the business. Bankruptcy?
25 October 2012 Gin kites announced that they will end their kite-business. Since that I have been waiting and hoping that they would get things fixed, I do not want that “my” kitebrand stops making kites. I have a 6m2 Gin Uru, and a 9 & 13 Gin Zulu, and they are awesome.

Youri Zoon and Gisela Pulido moves to BEST kiteboarding
One of the biggest news for 2013 season is that Youri Zoon joins best kiteboarding. Youri Zoon is the world champion 2012, and will probably be a good help for putting Best back on the kitesurf-map.

Downwind kitesurfing from Boracay to Union beach
When you have kitesurfed for a while on the quite crowdy Bulabog beach on Boracay, you might want to enjoy a place with kilometers of flatwater and only maybe 7-8 kites in the air? Then it is time to head to Union beach for a day. And a good way of getting there is to […]

The day of crashing handlepasses
Today I thought I should learn some tricks to blind and some handlepasses, starting with Raley to blind, followed by S-Bend to blind, Flat 3, and Backroll + 360. I could now write a book about how to fail in making handlepasses and blind-riding. I think that everything just failed. But it was fun, and […]

Comment!Liquid Force closing the kiteboarding division
I think you are right, kitesurfing is no longer a beginner-friendly sport because everything becoming so expensive. When I started in 2005 I bought a used Cabrinha kite for 250 € and a board for 150 €, a used harness for 40 € and a wetsuit for 80 €. And started in the winter, so I needed only the kite and the harness to begin with. I got started for around 500 €. And the one who sold the gear to me taught me how to ride (included in the price, even if everything was second hand). Would that be possible still today? I'm not sure. But I think it could be turned around, I think there is a spot open on the market for low-price entry-level kites and boards. A beginner does not need ultra carbon hyper flexy shiny things on the board. And they could manage well with just any SLE kite and a really standard harness. Something they could learn on and ride the 2 first years with. I think some brands could start making cheap entry-level stuff in large volumes and take over most of the schools by giving extremely good deals to them. Looking at schools as a marketing investment rather than something that needs to be profitable. To be able to do that they will need volume, capital, and processes there, so I think only one of the established brands could do it. Could any brand make a 600 € 11 m2 SLE kite and a 200 € board today? What kind of volumes would be needed to make that profitable? - Comment!
Liquid Force closing the kiteboarding division
Kitesurf is sufering from the same syndrome Windsurf was a victim of. A top harness used to cost $100 usd 9 years ago... now we see $450 harnesses. The same happens with kites, boards, bars and even as ridiculous as standard gear such as (tshirts, sweatshirts, ponchos). Kites develop "radical new innovations" every year (most of the times hard to perceive) and for that they want to charge more..... leaving gear from previous years devaluated.... when the only real innovation is a different design or just a new bar color. Covid19 didn't put LF kite out of business.... just accelerated its downfall. Expensive gear + really expensive lessons + expensive airfares will injure the sport and limit the access to newcomers. Kitesurfing was meant to be a sport open to the public..... not an expensive sport that required you to have a brand sponsor in order to buy and renew your gear constantly. Will this be an isolated case? I am afraid this is just the first brand to go under. - Comment!
Lina in kitesurfing video from Finland – Summer 2013
Hi! Nice to hear that more girls take up kiteboarding in Finland! Lina always says that there are only old men on the beaches here nowadays. :-D Are you still in Finland? From Espoo you have some good spots nearby, in Hanko, there is a spot for almost every wind direction (Tulliniemi, 4 tuulen tupa, Silversand, and more). In Helsinki, you can always kite in Lauttasaari beach, and sometimes in Kallvik too. But from Espoo, I would go to Hanko every time I have an evening or weekend off. We live on the west coast now, so we do not visit southern Finland's spots so often anymore (we have 2 kids too, so it's more complicated now), but if you ever visit the west coast and it's windy, throw us a mail (jonathan.bjorkskog@gmail.com). We visit the great spots Storsand (between Vaasa and Pietarsaari) and Lohtaja quite often. Best, Jonathan - Comment!

Hello crew, I'm Célio Beleza a Kitewave rider in Brasil. I released my short film Starting Live, produced by Macos Montenegro in incredible brasilian places. Send a report and the short film will go by youtube link, ok?! I hope that you like and publish!! Thank's and ALOHA!! Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nY028fXJkfA Starting Live I know I was bold and asked to live my dreams. But today I understand more clearly and happily why I chose the sport and not manage business and money. I decided to manage my time, my days, my freedom and really live life instead of going through it. Anyone who thinks this is easy, that it is simple, is wrong. No, it's not. Detaching from what society imposes and from the standards considered as "ideals" is really not easy. There are many fantasies and social images that are empty at the bottom. Fake! Do not waste time, because each day is an opportunity. Do the "impossible", fight, count on the closest people, use your creativity, be bold, abuse and, more than that, believe that everything you dream of can come true! Kitesurfing in Sri Lanka (Kalpitya)
Hi guys, just bumped in to your page. Great write up. Few of the pics you have on your page are not loading anymore. And Sri-Lanka kite camp is not functioning anymore. But there is a lot of new developments in Kalpitiya. In case you guys wish to make any updates to your great write up, I will be happy to provide you up to date pics and also more useful information. For all those kiters looking for an authentic Sri-Lankan experience with locals there are few small projects around the main lagoon area. One of the places being Ruuk Village Kite Resort They also have a live WinDGuru station too : The place is a NO-Plastic project. You will love their kitchen ladies food. They are a small familiar place right by the lagoon. You will really have an off-the-beaten-track experience. - Comment!

Hi Jonathan, like the others have said - a great blog! I see you haven't made it over to the UK yet so thought I'd share a few of my favourite spots in case you or one of your readers fancies a trip over! I run a school based in west sussex http://southcoastkitesurf.co.uk and we have some great beaches around here such as Pagham, East Wittering and Bracklesham Bay. Over to the West I would really recommend Bantham, Westward Ho! and Hayle. Further North you have Hustanton and over in Wales check out Swansea Bay or Pembrey sands. Our best months to visit are between April and October when we get the best wind and even a bit of sunshine! - Comment!

Hi Jonathan. I am an author of crime fiction based in Whitstable, Kent, UK and kitesurfing has played an important role in the plot of my latest thriller. I have also lived in Spain and know Tarifa extremely well which is why my latest book begins and ends there. Would you be interested in me writing a guest blog for you which would include how I researched and spoke to the British champion? I look forward to hearing from you. - Comment!

Kitesurfing in Sri Lanka (Kalpitya)
The main attraction for kitesurfing in Kalpitiya is the flat and shallow water of the lagoons in the surrounding areas, as the Puttalam Lagoon, the Kalpitiya Lagoon or the Kappaladi Lagoon. There are many islands on the north of Kalpitiya too, with perfect spots for kitesurfing in flat waters, as Vella Island. Furthermore, the Indian Ocean is also a perfect spot for wave riders from May to October. And it's just that there are many places for kitesurfing in Kalpitiya! Your are welcome to my place I will show you the best spots! www.margarita-village.com, super nice camp! Ruben - Comment!
Kitesurfing in Sri Lanka (Kalpitya)
Great article. We were in Sri lanka back in 2011 feb-march exploring the country. Back then the northern territory was still a bit precarious and there fore we decided to avoid it. Never the less our team from www.surf-store.com does yearly trips with whole team together and at theat time we were in the South. Unfortunately the wind season wasnt that great but the SWELL season was awesome. So we just adapted and did a lot of surfing. Hikkaduwa, mirissa, weligama were awesome spots. We belive that in summer month those also awesome kitesurfing spots now! - Comment!
