We wanted to learn more wakestyle tricks during February, and preferably in a warm and affordable location. Sri Lanka seemed like a great choice, despite being off season during winter. We still wanted to use mostly 11 m2 and 13 m2 kites, and therefore the off season winds in the lagoons in Sri Lanka suited us perfectly. Read what we thought about Kappalady Kite Garden as accommodation for the first part of the trip here.
We chose Kappalady Kitegarden as accommodation. Kappalady Kitegarden is at the “small lagoon” a little bit south from Kalpitya.
Note: Kitesurfing in Sri Lanka is mostly done in the lagoons around Kalpitya, and there is mainly two spots. The “Big lagoon” in north with all the kitecenters, and in the small lagoon more south, with only a few centers. Kappalady kitegarden is one of the centers in the small lagoon. In high-season (starting in May) the wind direction is much better for the small lagoon. In off season the small lagoon is still rideable with 12-13 m2 kites, and is totally uncrowded, in contrast to the big lagoon where there is quite a lot of kites.
Kappalady area
Kappalady is a small village close to Kalpitya. The area around Kalpitya is filled with small villages that is either Christan or Muslim, and the people are very nice everywhere. We visited homes and saw how people lived in quite different ways depending on which of these they belonged to. Children here are very curious, and if you have some spare pens, they will be really happy for it.
Accomodation at Kappalady Kitegarden
Kappalady kitegarden is a hotel / kite center besides the lagoon with a big garden that is really well taken care of. It have a few quite luxury rooms and some more affordable ones, both with and without Air Condition. There is a restaurant with the chef present almost all the time, that prepared food for us at breakfast, lunch and dinner. This is included in the accomodation price, and much needed, because at Kappalady there is nothing, no restaurants, no real shops or anything. Just a few small kiosks. But pictures says more than 1000 words, so here are a few images from the Kitegarden:
This was a really comfortable place close to the small lagoon, if you are interested in it please comment or find out more on their website.
